10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

WHERE: Harry Gaines Fish Camp, Kenai River, Soldotna

For the last nine years, the Kenai River Jr. Classic has been building future sport anglers, one child at a time. This annual event allows military and scouting youth, many who otherwise would not have the opportunity, to experience the magnificent Kenai River.

The Alaska Office of Boating Safety will teach Jr. Classic participants about safe boating and awareness on the water. Then, Central Peninsula Hospital SAFE Kids will provide each child with a life jacket and will explain the importance of always using a Personal Flotation Device (PFD) while on the water. Kids will learn about fish and river ecology through instruction from the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies and Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, as well as participate in fun game activities through Sportsman’s Warehouse, Home Depot, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Everyone will be treated to a free lunch.

In the afternoon, the kids will get to go silver salmon fishing with a licensed Kenai River guide. For many of these youth, this is the first time they have ever gone fishing. KRSA hopes it will be the beginning of a life-long love of the sport.

25 boat sponsors and generous donations from local government agencies, businesses and individuals make the day possible. This year’s major sponsors include Alaska USA Federal Credit Union and Alaska USA Foundation.

MEDIA NOTE: A boat providing access to the event can be provided to media outlets with advance notice. Please contact Ricky Gease at 907-398-2260 cell to make arrangements. If you’d like to talk to youth participating in the event, they will arrive on-site at around 10 a.m. Kids will head out on the boats at approximately 1 p.m., and will return at 4 p.m.
