Cook Inlet Personal Use Dip Net Fisheries open this Weekend on the Kasilof

Cook Inlet personal use (PU) dip net fisheries for salmon offer families a great opportunity to harvest fish. Permits are required for PU fisheries at Kenai, Kasilof, Fish Creek, and for the Kachemak Bay coho salmon gillnet fishery. Kenai, Kasilof, and Fish Creek permits are available at most license vendors in the Mat-Su Valley, Eagle River, Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula. You must have a current year’s Alaska sport fishing license (or the ADFG Permanent ID or DAV card) to obtain a permit. Only one permit per household, not one permit per person. Permits must be returned to ADFG by the date indicated on the permit.

Remember, retained salmon must have both tips of the tail fin immediately removed from the salmon. It is also a good idea to bleed the fish at the same time and ice the fish afterwards. All fish harvested (salmon and flounder) must be recorded on the permit, in ink, immediately upon harvesting fish. This means prior to concealing salmon from plain view (in a cooler) or transporting the fish from where harvested.

For the Kasilof, Kenai and Fish Creek PU fisheries, the total yearly harvest is 25 salmon and 10 flounder for the permit holder (head of household) and 10 salmon for each additional household member. The limit is combined for all four fisheries, not for each fishery.

The Kasilof PU dip net fishery opens Saturday, June 25 and closes on Sunday, August 7. Fishing is allowed 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. No retention of king salmon is allowed. Fish can be harvested from the bank or boat.

The Kenai PU dip net fishery opens Sunday, July 10 and ends on Sunday, July 31. Fishing is allowed only between 6 am and 11 pm. Retention of one king salmon is allowed, unless closed to retention by Emergency Order. ADFG indicated it will announce near July 10 whether king retention is allowed.
