Upper Cook Inlet Commercial Fishing Announcement No. 5 opens commercial salmon fishing with set gillnets in the Kasilof Section of the Upper Subdistrict from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 2, 2016. Drift gillnetting will be opened in the Kasilof Section (not the Expanded Kasilof Section) of the Upper Subdistrict from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 2, 2016. The escapement rate of sockeye salmon into the Kasilof River is proceeding at a rate greater than that needed to assure optimum escapement levels. In order to reduce the rate of escapement and facilitate an orderly closure at the end of the fishing period, additional fishing time in the abovedescribed area is warranted. 5 AAC 21.365 Kasilof River Salmon Management Plan states that the Kasilof Section set gillnet fishery is restricted to no more than 48-hours of additional fishing time per week from the beginning of the season through July 7. With this fishing announcement, 24 hours of additional time will have been used for the week of June 26–July 2.
