Upper Cook Inlet Commercial Fishing Announcement No. 9 opens commercial salmon fishing with set gillnets in the Kasilof Section of the Upper Subdistrict from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2016. Drift gillnetting will be open in the Expanded Kenai and Expanded Kasilof sections (Figure 1) of the Upper Subdistrict from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 9, 2016. The Kasilof River Salmon Management Plan (5 AAC 21.365) states that the Kasilof Section set gillnet fishery is restricted to no more than 48-hours of additional fishing time per week from the beginning of the season through July 7. The Kenai River Late-Run Sockeye Salmon Management Plan (5 AAC 21.360) allows for no more than 108 hours of addition fishing time per week in the Upper Subdistrict set gillnet fishery beginning on July 8. With this fishing announcement, 25 hours of additional time will have been used for the week of July 3–July 9. Drifters are reminded that according to 5 AAC 21.310(b)(C)(3)(A) drifting is not allowed within two miles of the mean high tide mark on the eastern side of the Upper Subdistrict until those locations have opened for fishing with set gillnets. Because set gillnetting has not opened in the Kenai and East Foreland sections in 2016 yet, drifting is not allowed within two miles of the mean high tide mark in these areas for this fishing period. 5 AAC 21.310 Fishing Seasons states that the Kenai and East Foreland sections set gillnet fishery opens on the first regular Monday or Thursday fishing period on or after July 8. In 2016, the first regular period is Monday, July 11.
