Area Closed Notice

Alaska State Parks has identified areas near the Kenai River where recreational use is restricted to protect sensitive habitat.

The land adjacent to a waterway, such as the Kenai River, is known as the riparian zone and plays a crucial role for various reasons. Healthy riparian vegetation stabilizes the riverbank, slows the velocity of the water, and provides food, shelter, and shade for juvenile salmonids.

Think of these areas as nurseries for baby salmon.

It is important to avoid closed areas and to use public-use trails and boardwalks when possible. Maintaining a healthy habitat on the Kenai River will help sustain healthy fisheries for years to come.

Avoid placing personal items on the riverbank and accessing the river through closed areas.

Heavily used walking trails can crush riparian zone vegetation. Over time, without support from healthy vegetation, riverbanks can become more susceptible to erosion.

Soldotna Fishwalk at the Soldotna Visitors Center provides access to the Kenai River for anglers while protecting sensitive habitat. Learn more about KRSA’s access projects HERE.
